Scout: Mum, can I have a Barbie when I’m 4?
Mum: Not when you’re 4 sweetie, probably when you’re 6 or 7?
Scout: That’s a great idea! How about when I’m 5?
Mum: How about when you’re 6 or 7?
Scout: [Pause] How about 10?
Mum: I’m OK with 10…

Conversation in the Kitchen #2
12 November 2009, 08:02
McG is talking to me about his friend’s Buck’s Night the night before and recounting the silly (yet non-pornographic) antics of the evening.
McG: and then he (the Buck) took off his underpants at the table and held them up!
Scout (listening in on the conversation from the dining table): To show off his ‘gina?
McG: Boys don’t have a ‘gina!
Kinki: Scout, only girls have a ‘gina - what do boys have?
Scout: A Brain!!!
Proof from a 4 year old then men, do indeed, think with their dicks…
High Heels on the High Seas

Scout used to manage a fairly decent “pirate”. It was a hearty imitation. She would spend ages in front of her full-length mirror perfecting her pirate (in between flashes of pirouettes and high-heeled curtsies). She even forewent pink frills and frolls for a friend’s party in exchange for a more seafaring palette of red and blue. She even let us put a - gasp - pirate patch over her face and bandana over her Rapunzel hair.
It didn’t last long, of course. Requests for her to do her “pirate” were met with protestations that she was not to make like a salt, rather be a “baby pirate learning how to walk” (which looked, oddly enough, exactly like a lame pirate limping down the gangplank), or a “pretty” or “beautiful” pirate. Meh. My child is such a girl.
Pink Ribbon Breakfast
2 November 2009, 17:49
Scout’s creche had a Pink Ribbon Breakfast this morning. Apart from it being a real struggle to find anything Pink for Scout to wear, it was a lovely morning - the sun was shining, I met some new mums and the pink-iced cupcakes were Heaven. Except my thighs are now officially going to Hell.
I love that her creche is really proactive about these fundraising events. Not so long ago they had a PJ Day to raise money for the homeless, and the kids had their naps outside to get a taste of what it might be like to have to sleep outside. For Scout, she got to see what it might be like to have some not-so-quiet time outside…
I’m guessing her edumacation today was all about counting the seconds it would take for her to scoff a large, bedazzled cupcake so she wouldn’t have to share it with her dad.
She didn’t get past 10.
Halloween
30 October 2009, 17:38
I’m a sucker for Halloween. I wish our streets were safe enough for Scout and her peeps to go trick or treating in the spirit of brilliantly contrived lolly-scams (I did buy some candy… just in case). I can’t help it. I love a good scare. I love a bit of sinister undercurrent in my day (although I could probably do without the redneck chaos of Salem during Haunted Happenings). I love that - in theory - my child can dress up as something that is not a fairy or a princess.
Originally I had planned to go to Karaoke with some girlfriends (scarier than a Harry Warden gas-mask and a chainsaw put together) but alas, sickness prevailed (cue white mouth frothing and bright white zombie eyes. Except not.) But instead, Husband and I watched a brilliant thunder and lightning storm, then tucked ourselves away for a horror movie “Quarantine” (U.S remake of [Rec]). It was perfect just as it was.
And the best part is that there is still candy in the pantry.
