xxth Birthday

17 April 2010, 10:07

For my birthday, Husband took me to Hellenic Republic, one of the restaurants owned by George Colombaris.

The food was magical – we shared a dolmathakia for entree (vine leaves stuffed with lamb, rice and mint) which we asked to heat up due to lysteria fears. They were bloody delicious warm – why the hell aren’t they always served warm?

For main, I had the spit chicken, which was not, in fact, spat upon, but was melt-in-your-mouth greek goodness. The star of the meal for me was the Cypriot grain salad, though – freekeh, currants, pine nuts, yogurt and coriander. It was freekin’ awesome.

The atmosphere was definitely big table party time. It was deafening, with the concrete floors carrying all the noise from the back of the restaurant. It was hard to hear our conversation but Husband and I just speak shit anyway, so it didn’t really matter.

Service was a bit frantic. I got the feeling they were understaffed as the waitress looked constantly harassed. It wasn’t me, I swear.

Birthday pressies were a Gaye Abandon wallet from Husband and a Map 29 coin purse from daughter which had a map of our street. Such great, local taste my family have…
