High Heels on the High Seas

Scout used to manage a fairly decent “pirate”. It was a hearty imitation. She would spend ages in front of her full-length mirror perfecting her pirate (in between flashes of pirouettes and high-heeled curtsies). She even forewent pink frills and frolls for a friend’s party in exchange for a more seafaring palette of red and blue. She even let us put a – gasp – pirate patch over her face and bandana over her Rapunzel hair.
It didn’t last long, of course. Requests for her to do her “pirate” were met with protestations that she was not to make like a salt, rather be a “baby pirate learning how to walk” (which looked, oddly enough, exactly like a lame pirate limping down the gangplank), or a “pretty” or “beautiful” pirate. Meh. My child is such a girl.
