Love Song of "O"

8 February 2008, 19:24

Scout has a little friend at creche, lets call him “O”. “O” is a gorgeous character, full of boyish charm and an impish grin, and Scout and him have this amazing connection. Whenever they see each other, they run to each other and cuddle, then chase each other around the table. Then cuddle some more, then scream with hysterical laughter, then engage in a little kissing if the mood takes them. They are like Heathcliff and Cathy on Speed. If they had a moor they could dance around on, you wouldn’t see them for literary dust.

Scout has lots of friends but I’ve never seen her engage with any of them like the way she does with “O”. It’s quite beautiful to watch. The other day at creche, “O”’s dad and I just stood there watching them flick the washers up and down on the taps (convenient nipper height) crying with laughter.

"Hello, Oscar? Oscar? I'll be right there..."
“Hello O? O? I’ll be right there…”

Unfortunately we’re not close to “O”s parents which feels weird, as “O” would probably be Scout’s #1 choice for a pahtay guest. They seem like decent people, and we’re on friendly terms with them, but nothing outside creche walls. I hope that changes over time, as the creche director swears Scout and “O” are getting married.

Outlaws, anyone?

  1. It’s been a while since I posted K, in fact I do believe most of the “personal” writing in cyberspace is self-indulgent time-absorbent junk. But you show glimmers of talent amidst the general detritus out there. Keep up the good work! I know what it takes to succeed in media as my family runs a $6 billion media company in the US, and believe me, we started with nothing; only hard work, discipline, and a gift for language.

  2. Thanks David – very kind of you to say. This blog thing needs motivation and inspiration and can sometimes be difficult to find in the minutiae of ones’ day.
