Seven Year Itch
31 December 2007, 08:26
I have to say I’ve been uninspired to write very regularly of late (says I after 4 posts in a row). Truth is my life is rather uneventful and whilst I would love to keep sharing photos of Scout with you as she grows up and out, that can’t be very interesting to anyone but me. Or her as she loves looking at photos of herself.
Most of my energies have gone into channeling Scout by way of Wrigglepot , which pings my creative tuning fork more than recounting the peculiarities of my day ad nauseum.
But I’m coming up to the 7 year Itch with this blog, enjoying a love/hate relationship with it and am finding it mentally challenging to consider giving it up entirely, so I’m not sure what to do. Perhaps a redesign will reinspire me? Change the focus to an irreverent parenting blog and piss a lot of people off? I seem to do this without even thinking in real life so won’t be difficult on the web.
Have others felt this lack of spirit with their blogs? What have you done in this situation and did it work??? I need help!
Permanent Link - well, you know me, i sort of had no direction to the blog until i learned to knit! now, it’s all crafting and baby and it has its merits. i know plenty of bloggers that do the same thing/have the same direction and we have a tight little circle of readers. i know that kids take up a lot of time, but i say, find something that you’d like to do! if it’s photography, point the blog in that direction. do a 365 thing or learn a new hobby or craft. anything’s possible! it’s a new year coming up!
you know i’ll be here regardless of your direction. i would definitely miss you if you left!

I just let the blogging slide now, if something comes up that I want to write about, I will, but the days of posts every week have long gone.
The way I figure it is that it is my blog and I’ll write when the urge takes me – better than stressing about it on Monday lunchtimes, which is what was happening at ‘the end’.
— bogue Jan 1, 12:19 AM # - depends on what purpose this blog has for your life. I like to use mine as a record of various events/things that are amusing, particularly concerning the kids, because I inevitably forget most of it about 3.5 secs after it happens. I don’t think your life is boring, do you? Being a 24 hour party person or being a mum or being whatever all have their own challenges and moments – it is how you view them and record them that makes all the difference.
— Sharon Jan 1, 07:18 PM # - Thanks guys – I appreciate you all taking the time to help me with my life and my creative retardation.
I think maybe I’ll keep it in the same vein – Sharon, as you say, you tend to forget things after a couple of seconds, so perhaps an account of my life that I (or Scout) can look back on in a few years is not such a bad thing…
— Kinki Jan 7, 07:44 AM # - Howdy Kimbo. I think you’ve basically written out the answer for yourself (usually the best way to go about it, keep writing until eventually you write the answer!) I know one thing for sure, you’ll never be able to give up your blog so don’t even try that one! I’m only a semi-obsessive writer compared to yourself and I came and went on my blog for years! Unless you can 100% find a writing outlet to replace it with. To me, blogs are like a ‘quick fix’ drug for writers, like instant coffee. I weighed up my options, do I want (or need) the constant regular instant gratification (of my 2 readers!) or can I hang in there as the struggling unappreciated creative genius that I am for 4 or 5 years in order to write my masterpiece and become world famous?!! It’s tough to find that balance, it’s the writer’s journey, and in a way the blog has complicated that journey further (like most modern technology!) You are right though, you have changed since the 35 degrees Japan days of the blog being a mum now. I reckon a good idea might be to split your blog into 2 sections, at the start when people log on you can give them the option of going to your ‘mum/scout’ section, or your ‘kimbo in cream mode blowing away all opposition on the buzzer’ section. Keep positive about your writing though, thats important, and keep regular exercising to get the blood into the brain for the big insights into life that the common mortal can never achieve! Enjoy the journey! See you guys in 1 MONTH! can’t wait to see how big Scout is now!
